A center of excellence in molecular microbiology is needed to: function as an interdisciplinary and cohesive group of collaborating scientists who conduct research to discover the mechanisms of microbial pathogensis and invent, develop and apply novel technologies for the discovery of new antimicrobial targets, vaccines and diagnostics; serve as a group of faculty dedicated to the education and training of future scientists and clinicians who will be leaders in the field of cutting-edge technologies for the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of infectious diseases, and to promote the sharing of scientific information.
