Artificially Grown Miniature Organs to Advance Stroke Treatment

Yan Li of FSU has received $1.8 million from the NIH to improve treatment for stroke patients. Li will use artificially grown miniature organs to develop medicine that targets the brain cells that are damaged by stroke.

Li will harvest particles from the miniature organs that are naturally released by cells, engineering them to act as medicine. “Because these particles are coming from the cells that mimic the human brain, we think that what they secrete will be more beneficial for treating the damaged brains of stroke patients,” said Li.
