Study to Update Hepatitis B Treatment

Paul Martin of UM is joining a national study to improve a treatment to manage chronic hepatitis B infections, a leading cause of liver cancer. Martin highlights the importance of preventive therapy, even if the infection appears to be inactive.

“Our goal was to offer a guide to clinicians in managing this complex disease in order to avoid irreversible scarring of the liver that can result in poor outcomes,” said Martin. "Chronic hepatitis B can be setting the stage for liver cancer, even if the disease is not progressing. These studies point to the need for earlier interventions than recommended in the past.”
