UM's Malek Develops Therapy for Autoimmune and Inflammatory Diseases

Thomas Malek has partnered with Bristol Myers Squibb to advance fusion protein therapy that helps patients with autoimmune and inflammatory diseases such as Type 1 diabetes. Malek has been studying interleukin-2 protein, which regulates white blood T-cells and could boost immunity.

“Current therapies target the symptoms of autoimmune disease, such as inflammation,” said Malek. “This new approach targets and enhances the regulatory process that is defective in these diseases. Our hope is that this research will lead to treatments that can help millions of patients with autoimmune and inflammatory diseases enjoy a higher quality of life.”
