Alzheimer’s Risk in Mixed-Ancestry Populations

Margaret Pericak-Vance has received $11.47 million from the NIH to advance research on Alzheimer’s disease risk in people with admixed backgrounds that have not been included in previous studies- such as Caribbean Hispanics descended from Spanish-Portuguese, Southern European, and Amerindian ancestors.

“With changing U.S. demographics, understanding the risk and protective factors for Hispanics and other diverse groups is vital for improving disease prediction, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment for everyone,” said Pericak-Vance. “It also champions UM’s commitment to diversity, and hemispheric collaborations.”
