Innovative Underwater Camera Is Small but Mighty

FAU’s Bing Ouyang and colleagues have received a patent for an invention the size of a soda can that is a potential gamechanger in underwater imaging. It mounts easily on undersea vehicles and overcomes issues related to contrast loss, blurring, and dispersal of light that occur underwater.

“This invention will increase advanced underwater imaging techniques and equip underwater unmanned vehicles with the capability of identifying and extracting or neutralizing threatening underwater objects or devices,” said Ouyang. The compact imaging device could also assist divers during deep diving exercises, inspections of the underside of vessels, and underwater robotic operations.
