MagLab Pursues Batteries That Charge Faster and Last Longer

Solid-state batteries are safer than liquid-electrolyte-based lithium-ion batteries and offer the higher energy densities and longer battery life needed by the next generation of electronics. However, they are expensive to produce and difficult to manufacture in large quantities. Yan-Yan Hu’s team at the National

Electrolytes are a crucial battery component, facilitating movement of ions between electrodes and enabling the battery to be charged or to supply power. The FSU team discovered a strategy using an electrolyte made of lithium chloride and gallium fluoride that can promote ion transport in solid electrolytes, leading to faster charging and longer battery life.
