USF COPH: Together we will change lives!
Injuries are the leading cause of death among children and young adults. Research at the USF College of Public Health focused on the prevention of these injuries has shown significant results. In addition to research, advocacy for changes in injury-related laws and policies is essential for implementing better and safer outcomes. An example would be Florida’s mandatory child bicycle helmet law that became effective on Jan. 1, 1997.
Bicycle helmet safety is one major advancement with injury prevention, with many more needed. Behavior changes related to suffocations, drownings, motor vehicle injuries, sports injuries, and more as shown in this video are effective. Through education, behavior change, engineering changes, and enforcement of laws and policies, injuries among children and adolescents will decline and as a result, lives will be saved.
At the USF College of Public Health, our practice is our passion and we are passionate about injury prevention!
