Biography
Welson Tremura holds a Ph.D. in ethnomusicology and currently serves as a professor at the University of Florida’s School of Music and the Center for Latin American Studies. Dr. Tremura is also the director of the Florida-Brazil International Linkage Institute and the Brazilian Music Institute. Furthermore, he possesses a law degree and a technical degree in civil engineering from Brazil and has spent several years developing businesses between Brazil, the USA, and France. Dr. Tremura has an established ethnomusicological academic career, extensively researching the interplay between music and religion as seen in Brazil's folk Catholic traditions, such as the folia de reis, or the Three Kings celebration. Dr. Tremura’s book, “Brazilian Folia de Reis: With an Open Heart: A Spiritual Journey Through Song,” is available in paperback on several publishing sites. In 2022, Dr. Tremura released a book chapter titled “Folia de Reis Tradition: An Afro-Brazilian Experience in Rural Brazil,” published by PUC in Ecuador. His additional research areas include the application of digital technology in performance, global technology, and the integration of world music as a core discipline and collaborative method for composition and performance. He was responsible for setting up and managing a US manufacturing facility in Curitiba (Brazil) and worked with hydraulic lash adjusters, rocker arms, and shafts. He has also participated in translating complex technical and legal documents for biotechnology and assembly plants. As a performing artist, he combines his classical guitar and voice to perform in various locations, promoting collaborations both nationally and internationally. Dr. Tremura’s outstanding performances include concert halls across the USA, such as Carnegie Hall in New York City and the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center in Notre Dame, Indiana. He has also performed and given lectures in Brazil, China, Mexico, Guatemala, the United States, India, Spain, Portugal, Argentina, Italy, Ghana, Germany, the Netherlands, and New Zealand. Critics and audiences have continually praised Dr. Tremura for his interpretation of the most celebrated bossa nova songs and his guitar compositions.
