Florida Tech’s ATLAS Lab was recognized in the Florida Department of Transportation’s Advanced Air Mobility Business Plan for the lab’s role in advanced air mobility research and the shaping of Florida’s future “Aerial Highway Network.” The aim for the network is to offer faster, more flexible travel between the state’s key metropolitan areas, with aerial “freeways” that have dedicated travel lanes and on- and off-ramps.
The lab is led by Meredith Carroll, whose research focuses on autonomy, human-automation interaction, pilot interface design, and AAM training research. Carroll, who focuses on aviation human factors, is collaborating with computer scientist Siddhartha Bhattacharyya on a NASA-supported project to understand the vital role of trust in autonomy and establish a common framework for engineers and human operators to determine the trustworthiness of machine-learning-enabled autonomous aviation safety systems.
