BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF JOB DUTIES (flexible)
• 70% Extension
• 20% Research
• 10% Teaching
• 15% Administration
1. Conduct an applied research program in tropical fruit production and extend the results to the tropical fruit industry.
2. Develop educational and extension programs in tropical fruit production for producers, industry representatives, and extension agents.
3. Update, revise, and develop fact sheets, bulletins, circulars, and other written material on tropical fruit culture in south Florida.
4. Teach a summer course on tropical fruit production and research (HOS 5555, 3 credits). This course is offered to graduate and advanced undergraduates in alternate years.
5. Execute assigned associate director administrative duties at TREC.
EXTENSION PROGRAMS
• Program No. 1: Tropical fruit crops management in Florida.
• Program No. 2: Assist producers organize for their mutual benefit.
• Program No. 3: Inter-regional Program No. 4 (IR-4) Field Station.
• Program No. 4: In-Service Training of University of Florida Cooperative Extension Agents,
Master Gardeners and interested faculty.
TEACHING
• Graduate course offered - Tropical Fruit Production and Research; location - Homestead, Florida; course level - Graduate (HOS 5555), 3 credits; years offered - summer term B every even numbered year, 1990, 1992, 1994, 1996, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2012, and 2014.
RESEARCH (recent/current areas)
1. Plant iron nutrition and plant stress physiology.
2. Sustainable irrigation and nutrient management for tropical fruit orchards.
3. Insect/disease surveys, control strategies, and minor use pesticide registration for tropical fruit crops (IR-4).
4. Papaya plant breeding for resistance to papaya ringspot virus.
5. Improvements in postharvest handling of tropical and subtropical fruit crops.
6. Evauluation of jatropha for biofuel.
