Competitive Advantages:
Automatically detects seizures, False detection override option, Comfortable and non-bulky, Meets highest Coast Guard Personal Flotation Device regulations.
In one embodiment, a personal flotation device that can be worn by a user includes an inflation system including an inflatable bladder, a gas-generating component configured to generate gas using a chemical reaction and inject the generated gas into the bladder to inflate it, and an actuator configured to activate the gas-generating component; a sensor configured to sense one or more physiological parameters of the user; and an inflation control system configured to receive physiological parameter data from the sensor, to determine whether or not the user is experiencing a medical event that places the user at risk of drowning, and, if the user is experiencing such a medical event, to signal the actuator to activate the gas-generating component so as to provide floatation to the user. Our inventors have developed a device capable of automatically detecting seizures via electromyography (EMG) signals from electrodes placed on the user’s skin. It deploys life-saving flotation while not hindering normal aquatic activity when not deployed. The device includes a hydrogen gas-generating component inside of a specifically designed neoprene garment which provides the user with freedom of movement by providing a comfortable, yet tight fit. The system includes a manual override in case of a false detection, and a manual activation method similar to traditional deployable flotation devices that can be turned on at any time. Additionally, the system is constructed to provide enough buoyant force to meet the highest Coast Guard Personal Flotation Device regulations. This device will offer peace of mind to seizure sufferers that wish to participate in various aquatic activities.
