The Center for Intensive English Studies (CIES) provides professional instruction in the English language to non-speakers of English. International learners from over 50 nations have completed language studies in the intensive language program at CIES. The Center prepares international scholars for full-time study in English-medium universities as well as business and governmental professionals from many nations for international communication in English. CIES serves as a feeder program to various graduate departments on campus. In addition, CIES serves as a resource center for the university by providing instruction for enrolled students who require assistance in English-as-a-Second Language, by evaluating the language proficiency of non-native speakers, and by advising departments regarding language policies and second-language learning. In 2005, CIES assumed oversight of evaluating the spoken English proficiency of all potential international Teaching Assistants at FSU. This oversight extends, as well, to the FSU classes that prepare future international teaching assistants in spoken English and U.S. academic culture.
In January 2010, CIES launched a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) Certificate program. This program gives a student the foundation and basic skills needed to teach English successfully abroad and therefore will enhance the reputation of Florida State as its students go abroad to teach English. In 2014, CIES launched its ACES Program (Accelerated Courses for Enrolled Students). This is a 7-week course that newly-admitted international students can take prior to beginning their studies at FSU. This course introduces students to the culture and expectations of graduate study at Florida State University.
