The purpose of the Center is to study forms of political communication and argument in their natural settings and to discover practical applications of existing theory. Public discourse of this type is an essential element of the democratic process. Part of the mission is to facilitate practical training in argumentation and communication skills in both new (primarily post-Soviet) and established democracies and to discover the ways in which traditions of vital public emerge and are sustained.
