Our mission is to understand the role of hormones produced in the heart in health and disease. Our center coordinates research from Molecular Medicine, Molecular Pharmacology and Physiology, and Internal Medicine Departments concentrating on heart failure (5 million Americans) as it pertains to the aging population in Florida. Our aim is to improve heart failure utilizing three new heart peptide hormones, discovered by USF investigators that enhance sodium and water excretion. These cardiac hormones are useful to treat heart failure, renal failure and cancer where they eliminate up to 97% of all cancer cells within 24 hours in vitro and eliminate up to 80% of human pancreatic cancers growing in mice.
