Dr. Steven J. Duranceau is the Gerry and Ruth Hartman Professor of Environmental Engineering and Director of the Environmental Systems Engineering Institute at UCF. He is a recognized authority in potable water quality engineering and advanced treatment operations. He performs numerous distribution system corrosion control, disinfection by-product, and sulfide studies. Dr. Steve has supervised a number of Doctoral and Master’s students that have conducted research in Florida, Georgia, California, and the Cayman, Hawaiian and Marianas Islands. He currently serves on the editorial advisory board of Journals Membranes and Desalination and Water Treatment. He is a licensed professional engineer in Florida and has served as engineer-of-record on several advanced water treatment plants prior to joining UCF when he served as an executive of a national design engineering consultancy. He holds an honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy.

Mission	The purpose of the Environmental Systems Engineering Institute is to provide a means of conducting environmental research for faculty and students from different colleges, departments, and programs in the university. The Institute is primarily concerned with graduate environmental research, education, and student support, but does offer advanced environmental water quality analysis to non-university organizations in order to support the Institute's staff, maintain the laboratory equipment, and provide a technical service to the Florida community.
