I was trained as a developmental neurobiologist and neurotoxicologist but embrace and lead interdisciplinary studies related to human health. Cellular and molecular studies in my lab focus on the developmental basis of brain disorders. We examine the developmental influences of neurochemicals like dopamine and GLP-1 on brain structure and function. Dysregulation of these processes during neural development negatively affects brain structure and circuit function. We also engage in studies in human populations to study the effects of cognitive therapies on brain biomarkers and studying the effects of environmental chemicals like pesticides on neurological development and health disparities in rural populations, including farmworkers and their children. Our overall goals are to discover mechanisms that underlie risk and resiliency of brain health, discover new behavioral and drug therapies to treat brain disorders, and to establish new methods to improve the development and health of children.
