Abstract
This University of Central Florida invention is a free educational software
developed for first and second-year medical students to review basic heart anatomy and physiology and to manipulate various cardiac rhythms while
visualizing contractions, electrical activity, and blood flow.
The software requires Microsoft HoloLens 1st generation. MS Windows 10.0 or higher is required.
Description: This application is designed for first and second-year medical students and faculty. The UCF cARdiacĀ (TM) app is divided into two sections. The first section is basic anatomy and physiology for first-year medical students, and the second section is for second-year students and focuses on advanced cardiac rhythms such as atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, and AVNRT. Buttons allow students to modify parameters affecting cardiac function. The app uses a realistically rendered, anatomically correct, 3-D model of the heart. The second-year user interface displays animations of the heart that correspond to an animated electrocardiogram (ECG). The ECG is shown in real-time with animations of heart contractions and electrical activity. Students can adjust the heart rate for each rhythm. Students can turn on and off electrical current (visualizations corresponding to disturbances in cardiac blood flow) and blood flow (hemodynamics). There are clinical cases, multiple-choice quiz questions, and flashcards specifically designed for students in undergraduate medical education (UME).
The software package follows the standard process to install the app on the HoloLens. Provided documentation is easy to follow, and the app has a built-in tutorial for end-users.
