The Helios STEM (science, technology, engineering, and technology) Residency Program supports the implementation of two newly developed teacher education program for prospective teachers -- Middle School Mathematics 5-9 and Middle School Science 5-9. The development of this program was supported by a $3.16 million gift from the Helios Education Foundation, which represents that foundation’s largest investmentin USF and public education in Florida. This award provides USF and Hillsborough County Public Schools (HCPS) an opportunity to develop, test, and refine the program and the support structures needed for full and ongoing implementation. In addition, this program addresses the call to prepare effective teachers for the 21st century classroom by engaging them in extensive clinical experiences supported by skilled practitioners. The aims to produce, support, and enhance the retention of mathematics and science teachers who enter the field ready to teach the rigorous content standards (e.g., Common Standards State Standards for Mathematics, Next Generation Science Standards), understand the unique needs of adolescent learners, and are prepared to teach diverse student populations, including those in high needs environment.
