The Future of Oil | |
Audience: | Adults |
Description: | Often in the news there are reports of how the world is running out of oil and how oil is becoming scarce and expensive. This is an issue not only of geology, but also economics and politics. Dr. Britt will review the geology of how oil is deposited and recovered as well as the reasons why conventional oil is found (inconveniently) mostly in the Middle East. He will also cover the evolution of the economics of the oil industry, how the rise of national oil companies has fundamentally altered the landscape of conventional oil production, and the technical revolution that has brought us hydraulic fracturing (fracking). It is the interaction of the geology, geography, technology, economics, and politics of oil that have produced our current situation and policy dilemmas. |
