Expert Profile
I am a general internist who is working to better understand and improve clinical patient safety. My clinical practice is focused on the treatment of adults with complex chronic diseases in both hospital and outpatient/ambulatory care locations.

I have developed inter-professional protocols to standardize and improve the quality of medical care. I have collaborated on studies to determine the causes of medication errors, suboptimal control of diabetes among hospitalized patients, the validity of automated clinical alert systems, and the development of curricula to teach principles of quality improvement and patient safety to health sciences students. I am regularly invited to provide instruction on patient safety and clinical quality improvement. I have extensive experience teaching the application of clinical research methods as they relate to clinical decision making (evidence-based medicine) to health sciences students at all levels. I mentor medical students, pharmacy students, and physicians as they work to improve clinical quality and safety within our medical center.

My most recent efforts are focused on collaboration with population health researchers on methods of adapting statewide clinical research networks to enlist greater involvement of clinicians in research trials and utilization of data to improve management of chronic diseases. Additionally, I am collaborating with a research team to construct a quality registry within our institution to coordinate quality improvement efforts and create a “knowledge bank” that could increase the rate of dissemination of quality improvement successes.
