Facing the Challenges of Family Caregiving in an Aging Society | |
Audience: | Adults |
Description: | With the aging of the US population, increasing numbers of older adults develop chronic illness and disabilities. Family members often become caregivers for their loved ones with conditions ranging from mild impairment, through highly disabling conditions such as Alzheimer's disease. About 18 million Americans provide care for an older adult with impairments in daily activities. This presentation provides an overview of the value and importance of caregiving to allow older adults to remain in the community and prevent or delay nursing home placement; the stresses faced by family caregivers; impact of caregiving on psychological well-being and health; coping tips for caregivers; and how friends, families, employers, and healthcare and social service professionals can assist caregivers. Caregiving will be an increasing challenge in the United States and we should all be informed about challenges, and potential solutions, faced by family caregivers. |
