For more than a decade my research has centered on breast cancer initiation and progression, with particular interest in the tumor microenvironment. The tumor microenvironment describes the cellular environment surrounding the tumor that consists of many cells and signaling molecules including stromal cells, blood vessels, and extracellular matrix. We now understand that cancer cells and microenvironmental factors communicate through complex signaling to drive tumorigenesis and cancer progression. My lab is working to define and understand these signaling events to develop targeted cancer therapeutics.

My lab is also interested in using publicly available -omics (big data) to answer questions at the RNA level on what drives breast cancer progression, metastasis, and drug resistance.
