Livestock Production and Childhood Gut Health Linked

Sarah McKune of UF has identified a link between livestock production and gut health in children of middle- to low-income countries. Livestock production can provide income and nutrition, lift households out of poverty, and serve as an important predictor of childhood health outcomes, such as the likelihood of developing gut inflammation.

“The novel aspect of this work is that we tied three literature reviews into one. We are a very interdisciplinary team and nowhere that we know of has anyone done a collective risk-benefit analysis on child nutrition. Livestock production has both clear benefits and risks,” McKune said.
