Protecting Bones on Earth and in Space

Melanie Coathup of UCF is researching ways to protect bones from threats such as aging, degenerative diseases, and time in gravity-free space. She is currently developing a nanoparticle that mimics an enzyme in the body to help protect bones.

“The ultimate goal is to improve the future care and treatment of people, thereby positively impacting quality of life, promoting more active lifestyles and social engagement — and creating an overall healthier community,” said Coathup.
