Yellow Fever Vaccine Can Be Stretched in Outbreak

Derek Cummings of UF has found that the store of yellow fever vaccines can be stretched in an emergency outbreak, with only one-fifth of a standard dose slowing transmission. His work was published in The Lancet.

“There is only a certain amount of this vaccine made every year, and it’s very hard to ramp up production quickly enough to address an emerging outbreak,” said Cummings. The results will assist public health experts in responding quickly to yellow fever outbreaks with a limited supply of the vaccine.
