COVID-19 Infection Associated with Economic Disadvantage

Ana Palacio, physician and researcher at UM, has shown that COVID-19 infection is associated with economic disadvantage and stress in certain geographical areas. Palacio conducted the study using COVID-19 cases reported by the Florida Department of Health’s COVID-19 dashboard and census data.

“These findings are consistent with reports from many other conditions. Racial health disparities are driven by socio-economic disadvantage and not by biological or genetic differences,” said Palacio. The study offers a potential explanation for COVID-19 disparities in these areas, including comorbidities and socio-economic factors that affect minorities’ ability to socially distance.
