Diverse Breast Cancer Patients Had Less Genetic Testing

Few U.S. studies have examined germline genetic testing in young racially and ethnically diverse breast cancer patients. For over a decade, FAU researcher Tarsha Jones observed differences in genetic testing frequency and results among these patients diagnosed at age 50 or younger.

Jones found that, among 1,503 diverse breast cancer patients, less than half completed hereditary breast and ovarian cancer genetic testing, but that percentage increased over time. Also, the results of those genetic tests differed depending on race and ethnicity. “Our study…highlights the need to increase genetic testing completion among racially/ethnically diverse populations,” says Jones.
