Small Team Has Big Goals for Breast Cancer Research

The UCF College of Medicine’s Cancer Research Division focuses on cancer biology, including the role of genes in cancer risk, causes of cancer metastasis, cancer treatment resistance, and the immune system as cancer-fighter. Their goal is to discover innovative, targeted treatments that attack what cancers cells need to survive.

“Cancer cells ... need to survive, grow and get nutrients,” says researcher Annette Khaled. “If we can target those basic needs of cancer cells, then we have a therapy that not only works for breast cancer but works for many other cancers.” UCF’s breast cancer research team is relatively small, but they have been awarded more than $2 million in grants for their work.
