Predicting Heatwaves, Floods, and Wildfires

UM’s Ben Kirtman is working to find ways to make digital prediction tools more accurate and local, so communities can better prepare before they are hit with extreme weather events such as flooding, heat waves, and wildfires.

Kirtman received grants from NSF and NOAA to collaborate with researchers across the country to study the impacts of the El Nino climate pattern. “When you watch your weather forecast on TV...“they’re going to not only talk about how hot and humid and chances of rain, they’re going to start talking about, ‘What’s the flood forecast for this coming week?’ This is the kind of research that will inform that.”
