The Hopeful, Healthy Oceans (H2O) program, led by UM’s Diego Lirman, blends science and art for children to engage the next generation in protecting Florida’s coral reefs. “The idea was to change the negative narrative…to project a positive outlook, and there is no better way to do that than through the eyes of kids,” says Lirman.
After learning about coral reefs, the children paint their favorite marine animals. UM students lead educational sessions and art activities, enriching the children’s understanding of marine science and providing training for the older students in science communication and community outreach. At the kickoff exhibition, the children’s artwork was displayed on upcycled coral nursery trees.
