Concrete Cracks Save Lives

Christopher Ferraro of UF has identified a problem with many new building materials that are stronger or more durable than concrete: They don't develop cracks. Concrete cracks signal that something is wrong, a difference that Ferraro notes can save lives.

“Concrete will show signs of distress. It’ll start cracking and start spalling,” says Ferraro. “It’s a sign to pay attention, it’s time for maintenance.” Ferraro is working to make concrete stronger, more sustainable, and more durable.
