Algorithm Tops Docs at Predicting Surgery Complications

About 1.5 million U.S. patients develop a complication from a surgery each year. University of Florida researchers have developed a computer algorithm that is more accurate than a doctor when it comes to predicting these surgical complications.

The system is expected to reduce risks to patients and help surgeons optimize their operating-room strategies, according to Azra Bihorac, professor in the UF College of Medicine, and Xiaolin Li, formerly of the UF Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
