FIU’s Mark Finlayson is training AI to understand stories to help stop the spread of disinformation. “We are exploring the different ways stories are used to drive an argument,” says Finlayson. The team also developed a tool that can analyze a user handle to reveal their claimed name, gender, location, and more, which can help analyze an account's authenticity.
Another difficulty of understanding stories is that the sequence of events is rarely laid out in a neat order. Finlayson’s research on timeline extraction has advanced AI's understanding of event sequences within narratives. “In a story, you can have inversions and rearrangements of events…An AI model must be able to order the events in a story accurately. This is important not only to identify disinformation but also to support many other applications.”
