The national Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos has been extended to 2033. It is the most comprehensive epidemiological longitudinal study among U.S. Hispanics/Latinos, with 4,000 participants at UM and three other sites. Each will receive $21 million for this fourth phase. UM researchers have used the data from the first three phases to conduct 28 studies focusing on cancer, vascular dementia, obstructive sleep apnea, COVID-19, and more.
The grant continuation will allow them to collect additional data and conduct more sophisticated modeling for risk factors, disease progression, and clinical outcomes and incorporate artificial intelligence and machine learning to predict disease onset. “This groundbreaking study advances our understanding of unique risk factors among diverse Hispanics and informs targeted, precision prevention and medical care in cardiovascular diseases, as well as many other conditions,” says researcher Frank Penedo.
