A UCF team hopes to put AI to work to address the most widespread pain in the world. Colby Mangum’s research focuses on improving diagnosis and treatment for low back pain, while Laura Brattain is an expert in developing AI algorithms for analyzing medical ultrasound images.
MRI and CT are often used to assess musculoskeletal conditions, but MRI is expensive and CT exposes patients to radiation. Neither is good at imaging tissue movement. In contrast, ultrasound is safe, low cost, and can capture tissue dynamics, but interpretation tends to be highly subjective. The team will have AI and human raters analyze ultrasound images to establish if there is agreement between manual and automated analyses.
