The health sector has experienced data breaches that have exposed sensitive health and identity-related information about millions of people. Now a UWF team has developed a platform that evaluates the effectiveness of mobile healthcare-related apps in safeguarding users’ personal information, says researcher Hossain Shahriar.
The HIPAA Checker software produces a numeric score based on the app’s compliance with privacy laws. The risk level is also color-coded. App vulnerabilities can then be fixed on the back end, but the goal is to find and address security flaws early in the app development process. While the platform is primarily for app developers, individuals can use it too. Likewise, it can perform general security checks, not just checks targeting medical information.
