Exploring Links among Poor Sleep, TBI, and Epilepsy

FIU’s Oleksii Shandra is studying whether the effects of chronic sleep disruption and traumatic brain injuries combine to increase a person’s risk of developing epilepsy. The study focuses on soldiers and veterans. While working on an earlier project, Shandra discovered electrographic biomarkers that could predict the onset of epilepsy.

“We can build on that research by studying the effects of chronic sleep disruption, too,” says Shandra. If his hypothesis is correct, people that experience this series of events could be prime candidates for a non-invasive preventative treatment called transcranial magnetic stimulation. “If we can identify the people who have a very high chance of developing epilepsy, we might be able to help them before the seizures arrive.”
