Using AI to Improve Storm Surge Forecasting

Current storm surge forecasts use current environmental conditions such as how fast a storm is moving, wind speed and direction, and shape of the seafloor to project surge height and determine which locations are at risk. However, these high-resolution simulations can take several hours to run.

AI is already being used in storm surge forecasts in a limited way. However, Navid Tahvildari’s team at FIU is training AI to use observed data, assess damage after hurricanes, and process camera images to compute flood intensity. Such granular information can fill a critical gap in the data needed to provide the neighborhood-level detail communities can benefit from.
