Survey Uncovers Pre-Columbian Artifacts on UWF Campus

UWF archaeologists have been locating and studying various archaeological sites on the Pensacola campus for decades. During a recent archaeological survey, a team led by Ramie Gougeon and Jennifer Melcher uncovered artifacts linked to pre-Columbian Native American cultures.

The survey is part of the university’s preparation for upcoming infrastructure improvements. The survey re-located a previously documented site first discovered in 1989. Through systematic shovel test excavations, the team recovered ceramics associated with the Weeden Island culture of the Woodland period, likely dating between A.D. 600 and 900, and the middle-to-late Mississippian period (approximately A.D. 1250 to 1600).
