Opening New Pathways to Treat Diabetic Neuropathy

Neuropathy is pain, numbness, and tingling in the extremities, and it’s a problem for many diabetic patients. A UCF team is researching new ways to treat this condition. While currently drugs like opioids and antidepressants are used to mitigate symptoms, Jim Nichols seeks better therapies.

“We’re diving into an area that’s fresh,” Nichols says. “The research aims we’re going after are based on the insulin signaling pathway, and how the neuropathy evolves due to insulin dysregulation. Ultimately, we’re looking at different ways to alter the insulin signaling pathway to prevent nerve degeneration.” The team hopes to improve neuron signaling for a more complete treatment.
