Digital Archive Provides Access to 500,000 Black History Records

More than 500,000 artifacts, memorabilia, and collections at the Meek-Eaton Southeastern Regional Black Archives Research Center and Museum at FAMU are now accessible online. The archive—MEBA Digital—was supported by funding from the National Museum of African American History and Culture, Institute of Museum and Library Services, and Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

The team used open-source web publishing platforms to complete the project. Users access the material through two online portals: EXPLORE to view artifacts and exhibits and LEARN for systematic search. “We are constantly striving to broaden our reach and make our archives accessible through technology,” says Timothy Barber. “This leap into digital access is just the beginning.”
