Informing Efforts to Stop Domestic Violence and Improve Care for Survivors

UCF researchers are conducting a statewide domestic violence needs assessment with the aim of helping policymakers develop more effective strategies to support domestic violence prevention. “We know how complex this social problem is,” says Kim Anderson. “We’re looking at criminal justice, sociology, health, and so much more that altogether could create solutions beyond any one discipline.”

The team is analyzing data from the Census Bureau, FDLE, and DCF; surveying organizations that provide domestic violence services; and interviewing survivors to understand access to care and risk factors. Team member Karina Villalba hopes efforts to prevent domestic violence in the U.S. will have impact globally. “It helps us keep pushing forward with our work so we cannot just be a beacon here in Florida and the United States, but to show the world what we can do.”
