Partnership Promotes Cross-University Research Collaborations

Several research projects are receiving support from the UMass Lowell-FGCU Collaborative Seed Funding Program, an outgrowth of a formal partnership to establish joint education, research, and career-connected opportunities. For example, FGCU’s Leandro de Castro is part of a project developing a data-driven computer model to predict and reduce plastic waste.

Chengyi Qu is collaborating on an AI-driven fraud prevention system that analyzes multiple warning signs to better detect suspicious activity. A team that includes Christopher Daly is analyzing how compound flooding events, which occur when storm surge and heavy rainfall happen simultaneously, could alter Southwest Florida’s coastline and protective barrier islands. Other teams are focused on energy and sustainability and developing a tool to help iterate design specifications for cost-effective and hurricane-resilient buildings.
