Evidence of Altermagnetism May Put New Spin on Electronics

Madhab Neupane team at UCF experimentally identified signatures of an emerging form of magnetism called altermagnetism in a layered material containing magnetic cobalt atoms. Altermagnetism combines the advantages of ferromagnetism and antiferromagnetism. The team used angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to measure the energy and movement of electrons and map the material’s electronic structure.

“These materials are distinguished from more conventional antiferromagnets by their ability to generate and detect spin currents without the negative effect of producing stray fields,” says Neupane. “This new property makes them very well positioned for use in many different applications — including spintronics, ultrafast memory devices, terahertz networks and energy-efficient electronics.”
