UWF has been named a Center of Excellence for Domestic Maritime Workforce Training and Education by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration, in recognition of its importance in developing the engineers and technical professionals powering Gulf Coast shipbuilding.
The university’s high-tech fabrication labs, industry-standard software, and dedicated waterfront complex allow students to explore campus-based learning opportunities and hands-on experiences. “This designation recognizes UWF’s ability to connect research and industry needs in ways that strengthen the regional economy,” says Nicole Gislason of the UWF Haas Center. The Haas Center’s role grew out of applied research the team conducted for a shipbuilder.
