Wave-Shaped Walls Protect against Hurricane Winds

A FAMU-FSU College of Engineering team have demonstrated how wave-shaped patterns on exterior surfaces of buildings reduce wind loads. By testing 3D printed models in a wind tunnel, the team found that wave patterns could reduce wind pressure by up to 60 percent.

“Changing a building’s shape can significantly reduce the intensity of wind forces it has to withstand,” says Pedro Fernández-Cabán “These nonconventional building shapes reduce the damage from worst-case severe weather scenarios. It’s another tool for engineers and designers to protect against wind damage.”
