Maria Alcaide, Deborah Jones Weiss, and Claudia Martinez lead UM’s participation in the MACS/WIHS Combined Cohort Study, which addresses the impact of health conditions affecting people living with HIV as they age. The study involves 13 research sites and more than 5000 participants across the U.S. Every site collects the same data, but investigators focus on different areas.
The Miami cohort includes 280 men and 250 women and focuses on the impact of chronic conditions on people living with HIV, including heart, lung, blood, and sleep disorders. Participants complete recurring health assessments that allow researchers to examine changes over time. A mobile research unit helps participants complete study visits. The UM team also participates in a sub-study focused on HIV and women of reproductive age in the southern U.S.
