Quantum Checkpointing Would Address Reality of Errors and Restarts

Quantum computing faces a quandry in that while the quantum states that power quantum computers can be easily disrupted, leading to errors and restarts, quantum computers cannot save their progress. FIU’s Janki Bhimani is developing approaches to quantum checkpointing that can preserve computational progress and restart workflows on quantum computers after interruptions.

The team is studying how quantum workflows perform across a variety of different hardware systems. “Scientists working on everything from new drugs to hurricanes would benefit from saving their progress because today’s quantum computers are error-prone and can’t save. That’s what makes quantum checkpointing so exciting, the problem stretches from quantum theory to hardware limitations and finding a solution will impact science and society.”
