Mission	The primary goal of this Center is to test the feasibility of gene therapy involoving recombinant adeno-associated virus (rAAV) for the purpose of enhancing islet and kidney transplantation as well as preventing the complications of the disease including diabetic retinopathy. Research conducted here will involve gene therapy using rAAV vectors containing various cytokines, anti-oxidants, or factors influencing angiogenesis; with the common theme being to render cells resistant to injury.
